Apple’s Location Patent

Category: Location Based Services,PatentsTeknovis @ 22:34

Somebody brought this article to my attention today: Apple gets killer location services patent.

I bet Apple is really excited about this, and Google is probably the most worried!

In fairness, I am not sure if this patent would remain valid if challenged :o

Pulse on Kindle Fire

Category: AndroidTeknovis @ 17:34

I read the Pulse will be included pre-installed on the Kindle Fire! See Pulse Scores Key Spot On Kindle’s Home Shelf; Co-founder Says It May Pass 10M Users This Year and Kindle Fire, Welcome to the Pulse Family!.

That is a great achievement, but then again, Pulse is a great application!

Microsoft Patents

Category: Hardware,Mobile Computing,PatentsTeknovis @ 13:10

Some of Microsoft‘s latest, and more creative, patents are described in Microsoft Patents Manipulation Of 3D Virtual Objects, Throwing Gestures.

I have actually seen very similar ideas presented already, and I am sure these would be invalidating prior art!

The first Galileo satellites were launched last week, according to Galileo Navigation Satellites Lift Off Thursday.

It seems that this has been discussed and planned for years, so it is great to finally see it starting to happen!

Tablet (Computers) and Online News

Category: Internet,Mobile ComputingTeknovis @ 10:45

I read an article yesterday claiming that tablet users consume more online news. See Tablets Drive Deeper News Consumption [STUDY].

Yes – I am definitely one of those people!

The thing that really annoys me about certain news websites (RTE, The Irish Times, BBC) is that their RSS feeds only contain the first line of the news story, and then I have to browse a very heavy desktop page to read the rest of the story. I wish that they would provide either a full feed, or a second feed with the full articles!

Dog Tracking

Category: Location Based Services,Mobile ComputingTeknovis @ 13:23

I read about a dog tracking device called Retriever over the weekend in Track Your Dog With Retriever, The Compact GPS Dog Collar.

There is nothing particularly innovative in this idea, but it seems to be well executed.

It interests me :) However, I must confess that I am wondering if it could equally well be used on a child!

Actually, I would be very interested in a generic version that I could hide in a car, or hide in a school bag, or in any other concealed area!

Popular Digital Cameras According to Flickr

Category: Digital Imaging,iPhoneTeknovis @ 10:56

I found some very interesting graphs from Flickr this week showing the most popular digital cameras with which its users take photos. See Flickr Camera Finder.

Perhaps the most amazing statistic has been the stellar rise of the Apple iPhone 4 to become the most popular digital camera!

I came across this very useful high-level introduction to web apps during the week – Anatomy of a HTML5 Mobile App.

This is definitely an area that is becoming very relevant to me!
