The “Evil” Bit

Category: Humour,Networks,Security,StandardsTeknovis @ 18:37

I had to read about the “Evil” bit in Request for Comments: 3514 this afternoon!

I wonder why it never caught-on!

Human Hotspots at SXSW

Category: Internet,NetworksTeknovis @ 17:43

There was a lot of discussion last week about using homeless people as mobile hotspots at SXSW, as described in Use of Homeless as Internet Hot Spots Backfires on Marketer.

I think that it was a good idea, but badly executed :o It was good to employ homeless people, but they should have been paid a better wage, and they should not have been objectified by their t-shirts.

Emerging Telco Charging Models

Category: Networks,TelecomsTeknovis @ 08:48

I just read an interesting blog post on emerging telco charging models: Euro ‘Google Tax’ battle looms.

I am not sure what the author means by the following:

However, what would stop the likes of Google, the most vocal of net neutrality supporters, from avoiding those networks altogether and routing their content via less expensive or free routes, maybe even developing their own.

Is it being suggested that Google would become a 3G/4G operator? I think that this is unlikely, but I could see it rolling out unlicensed wireless infrastructure in urban areas.

World IPv6 Day

Category: NetworksTeknovis @ 16:03

IPv4 addresses are due to run-out some time in the next few weeks, so there is growing media attention to this issue. In order to raise awareness, there will be a World IPv6 Day later this year. Many companies are going to temporarily switch to using IPv6, and I assume that is why that date was chosen. It could be very interesting! For more details see: Google, Facebook and Yahoo to test new net addresses.

You can test you own IPv6 readiness here: http://test-ipv6.com/

Finally, for an overview of Irish readiness see Irish IPv6 Task Force.

Intune Networks to Float

Category: Entrepreneurship,NetworksTeknovis @ 09:49

Amid all of the economic bad news, here is something positive! Intune Networks might be the next Irish company to make an IPO according to Intune targets IPO to be Ireland’s anchor tech firm.

This will be exciting to watch!

Exemplar Network

Category: Fourth Level,Networks,TelecomsTeknovis @ 17:07

During the weekend I read about Intune Networks and the Exemplar Network in Ireland’s next big thing – Govt commits extra €5m to Exemplar Network. It appears to be a very positive development, and I am delighted to see that it has such strong links to fourth level research.

The video Digital 21 – The Exemplar Network is worth looking at also. Unfortunately, I cannot embed it here :( It is funny to hear Eamon Ryan describe it as open source, and then realise that he does not actually know what that means :D

Eircom Broadband Update

Category: Networks,TelecomsTeknovis @ 11:33

Last night I read that Eircom will start upgrading its broadband offering. You can read more about this in either Eircom unveils ‘next-generation’ broadband or on Eircom’s site. (Unfortunately, I cannot link to it because all the links appear to require a session ID :( Stupid!)

One of the main points of this announcement is that Eircom will upgrade existing 1MB/s, 3MB/s, and 7MB/s connections to 8MB/s connections free of charge. That is good news, although I am not sure how many people really need this extra speed.

The other interesting change is that Eircom will now charge users based on the amount of traffic transferred. I realise that I do not know how much I transfer at the moment. I must investigate this on the Eircom web site :o

Finally, I agree with IrelandOffline‘s assessment that there is a lack of “next generation” about this offering! See Eircom and “next-generation” broadband.

Record Traffic For Irish Budget 2010 Announcement

Category: NetworksTeknovis @ 08:15

I noticed that INEX had record traffic levels last Wednesday afternoon of approximately 8.7Gbits/s according to the INEX traffic statistics.

I assume that this record was due to people watching the Irish Minister for Finance announce the annual budget for 2010 online thanks to RTE.
