Smart Futures is an initiative designed to encourage students to pursue careers in technology.

Smart Futures is a national campaign for second-level students in Ireland highlighting career opportunities in information and communications technology (ICT) in association with e-Skills Week 2012. It includes a digital content competition, an online careers fair from 23-27 January 2012, and regular updates on our blog about the sector, career stories and competitions.

It is a really good idea, and I think that it is very necessary! There are some very well known companies behind it, including Cisco, Ericsson, HP, Microsoft, Openet, SAP.

Anybody who has ever watched a Juniper presentation, read some Juniper material, or indeed had almost any contact with Juniper will be familiar with its cartoons. Actually, if you are not familiar when these cartoons then take a look at the collection contained at Juniper Cartoons. I think that some of them are brilliant!

However, it seems that Juniper no longer believes that these cartoons are appropriate for its image according to Juniper Kills the Cartoons!. Perhaps this view is correct, because some of the cartoons are very unflattering towards Cisco. Event the cartoonist agrees that the cartoons should end, according to Juniper’s Cartoonist Isn’t Bitter.

I am going to continue my series on Irish companies (and organisations) that are involved in standards organisations, and today I am going to focus on the GSM Association. This is appropriate timing for doing this, because the GSMA Mobile World Congress is happening soon in Barcelona. I have never attended this, but I would like to ;)

The GSM Association has several types of membership, and these are described in Types of Membership. I am going to focus on the Associate Membership type, and the members with this type of membership are listed in Associate Members.

Enterprise Ireland supports these companies, and it rents a large stand at the GSMA Mobile World Congress which these companies can use. I am a big supporter of standards for technology, and I was reading some specifications from one of the many standards organisations today. I suspect, perhaps incorrectly, that there are many Irish companies involved in international standards organisations. I know that standards participation by Irish companies is something that Enterprise Ireland encourages.

Therefore, I decided to write a series of articles listing the Irish companies that are involved in international standards organisations that relate to information communication technologies. I will also include non-Irish companies that have technical operations in Ireland. (It would be nice if I could replicate this for the entire EU, but I do not have the time for that at the moment.)

I am going to start this series by looking at the W3C, because it is probably the prominent standards organisation in relation to the Internet. I am basing these lists on the online membership list.
